As parents, we'd all want to raise our children and instil respect in them. To be respectful of us as their parents but also of other people and the world around them. It's normal as a parent to get upset when your child is being disrespectful by talking back or not listening. But it’s important to keep in mind that children aren’t born knowing what it means to be respectful towards one another. It’s our duty as their parents to guide them through a treasury of values in a journey of life.
What is Respect?
Respect is a way of treating or thinking about something or someone. If you respect your teacher, you'll admire and treat him or her well. It's more than just being polite, it’s also about empathy, appreciation, sympathy and kindness, consideration.
Why is showing respect important?
1. It helps everyone feel safe and free express ourselves.
2. Being surrounded in a respectful environment teaches us how to be respectful toward others naturally as we learn.
3. It means that you accept another person for who they are, though they may be different from you or if you don’t agree with them.
4. Relationships builds on feelings of trust, safety, and wellbeing.
